This is the one-time home of Beatrix Potter and one of the Lakes most well known landmarks. It is visited by lovers of the Peter Rabbit stories from all over the world.
The village of Coniston is situated next to Coniston Water where Donald Campbell died attempting his world speed record in Bluebird. The village today is quaint and very typically Lakes in style.
The church in Hawkshead is a lovely example of a Lakes church, of which there are many to be found. Compact dimensions yet with pleasing lines, rather like a minature church, built in local stone.
Bridge House is one of the Lakes most visited attractions. This tiny cottage sits astride the beck in peculiar fashion. Now operated by the National Trust it must rank as one of Britains most unusual dwellings.
This bridge is a popular attraction, especially at summer week-ends when it pulls bikers and families from a wide area. It is an idylic spot for a picnic and a paddle.
One of the best ways to see the lakes is from a boat. It gives you a unique view of both sides of each lake and an appreciation of what the Lake district is all about. Lake Windermere has several boat operators.
No Lakes calendar could be complete without a view of this bridge, which is probably the most photographed scene of the lakes. So typcial of a Lakes pack horse bridge but set in stunning scenery.
Toutbeck is an unspoilt Lakes village and one that is often missed being just off the tourist track. It is well worth a visit and this cottage is typical of the white-washed cottages of the area.
The small village of Levens, near Kendal, has a hall which is world famous for its topiary garden. The hall itself is a magnificent example of the country squires residence.

One of several crossing places for traffic in Kendal, spanning the river Kent. This bridge awaits you if you visit Kendal from the South and offers good views towards the parish church.
Crosthwaite is another secret gem of the South Lakes area. While most visitors find Cartmel and Grange, the nearby Crosthwaite is a timeless Lakes village with another cracking example of a Lakes church.
