The BMW 5 series - code E34 - took the 5 series into new levels of refinement and desireability. It became an instant hit with anyone who could afford cars in this price bracket and became the de-facto standard for all executive saloons.
Part of its appeal was the wide variety of engines available from the tax-dodging 1.8 litre 6 cylinder through 2.0, 2.5, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.5 litres including diesels. Whichever level you bought you got the same reassuring build quality and prestige.
