The Opel Ascona 400 was a car which should have been outclassed by cars such as Porsche, Lancia Stratos and Audi Quattro. But in the hands of Walter Rohrl it delievered him a world championship title. What it may have lacked in performance it gained in perseverence.
Notes
The Manta 400 was Opel's answer to Group B competition. It arrived too late though and did not have the best of times, lacking 4wd and power but became a popular and competitive car on National rallies.
It has gained a deserved cult-car following, especially in the UK & Ireland where Russell Brookes, Jimmy McRae & Billy Coleman took National honours. It found success in French and Dutch national championships too.
When the Manta bowed out it had nearly 80 international rally victories including Ivory Coast wins and a second place in the toughest rally of all - the Safari.
